Cassini Dynasty

When he got married, Cassini was a French citizen, because in April, some months before the wedding, the King had discussed with him the opportunity to reside in Paris or any other city in France, enjoying the rights of French citizenship by birth. Evidently, the proposal was promptly accepted since Cassini’s “Lettres de naturalité”, or letter of naturalization, was filed on June 14, 1673, signed by Louis XIV. Becoming a French citizen, the scientist, now Jean Dominique Cassini, ceased any legal link with Italy (Fig. 17.1).
